Brazil and China strengthen strategic partnership with focus on fruit growing and logistics expansion

Friday May 9th, 2025

Between May 12 and 19, 2025, the city of Shanghai, China, will host a significant Brazilian trade mission. The initiative, promoted by the Brazilian Association of Fruit and Derivative Producers and Exporters (Abrafrutas) in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil), is part of the Frutas do Brasil project and aims to deepen knowledge about the Chinese consumer market, especially in the melon and grape chains — fruits that are already authorized for export to China.

The program includes participation in the SIAL China 2025 international fair, technical visits to wholesale centers, retailers and importing companies, and strategic meetings with businesspeople from the sector. SIAL China is one of the largest food and beverage fairs in the world, bringing together thousands of exhibitors and visitors from different parts of the globe. Last year, the event had more than five thousand exhibitors and attracted an audience of 180 thousand visitors, consolidating its position as an essential platform for companies seeking to strengthen their presence in the Asian market.

The mission takes place in a context of growing importance of China for Brazilian exports. In 2023, the Asian country was responsible for 30.7% of Brazilian exports, being the main destination for national agribusiness products. In the first quarter of 2024, sales to China continued to expand, with a trade surplus of US$ 8.9 billion, the largest balance recorded with the country in the accumulated total of the first three months of a year.

In addition to trade initiatives, relations between Brazil and China have been strengthened through investments in logistics infrastructure. One example is the Bioceanic Railway, a project that aims to connect the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil to the Pacific Ocean in Peru, passing through several South American countries. The initiative, part of China’s New Silk Road, seeks to facilitate the transport of goods between continents, reducing costs and delivery times and expanding bilateral trade opportunities.
