Nutrition and health: learn about fruits that help with good cholesterol

Friday September 27th, 2024

There is a consensus among physicians and nutritionists that a balanced diet, combined with physical activity, is essential for promoting health and well-being. And for a diet rich in flavor, vitamins, minerals and fiber, Brazilian fruits are great allies, especially for those seeking a healthy body and a better quality of life.

When it comes to cholesterol, it is a vital compound for many bodily functions. It is important to understand the difference between “good” cholesterol (HDL) and “bad” cholesterol (LDL). While LDL can build up in the arteries and cause cardiovascular problems, HDL helps remove excess cholesterol from the arteries, taking it back to the liver for elimination. Nutrition plays a crucial role in balancing cholesterol, and fruits are great allies for those looking to improve HDL levels and protect the heart.

● Avocado

This fruit is rich in healthy fats that help control cholesterol levels. According to the Ministry of Health, avocado is a fruit rich in monounsaturated fats, which are good for the body’s functioning as they help reduce triglyceride levels, increasing HDL (good) cholesterol. In addition, avocado has high levels of antioxidants such as phytosterols.

● Apple

Apples contain pectin, a soluble fiber that helps reduce LDL cholesterol by preventing it from being absorbed by the body. They also contain antioxidant substances that fight free radicals and protect the body’s cells, defending the body against diseases and preventing premature aging.

● Grape

Grapes, especially red and purple ones, are rich in resveratrol, an antioxidant that can help increase HDL levels. They also contain tannins, resveratrol, flavonoids and other compounds that are very good for the body.

● Citrus Fruits (Orange, Lime and Grapefruit)

Citrus fruits are excellent sources of vitamin C and antioxidants that help improve blood circulation and increase HDL levels. Grapefruit, in particular, has properties that can reduce triglyceride levels and improve cholesterol.

● Red Fruits (Strawberry, Raspberry and Blackberry)

Rich in antioxidants, red fruits are great allies for cardiovascular health. They help reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, making it less harmful to the arteries. Strawberries, for example, contain bioactive compounds that can improve cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure.
