India Trade Mission takes Brazilian flavor to the other side of the world

Monday August 26th, 2024

A Brazilian delegation will land in Asia for the Trade Mission that will take place between August 28 and 30 in Mumbai, the largest and most important city in India. The mission organized by the Brazilian Association of Fruit and Derivatives Exporters (Abrafrutas) promises many business opportunities, especially for apples, avocados and lemons from Brazil.

The association encourages producers to participate in the event, with the aim of fostering networking and promoting new international agreements, strengthening the export of our products. Producers of the most diverse types of Brazilian fruits will be present, as well as samples of their products to be displayed and distributed to the public during the event. Exporters, producers, sales representatives, distributors, associations and local institutions are expected to attend. Confirmed companies include Citrolima, Be Fruit, Frutas Don Vicente, Up Fruit, Brasfruit, Frutas Cone and Xportare.

During the trip to India, the Abrafrutas producer delegation will carry out technical visits to learn about the country’s market and fruit production. Visits to production centers and markets are planned, with the aim of better understanding how fruit trade and consumption among Asian consumers work.

Opportunities for Brazil

With a booming economy and a population of over one billion people, India has enormous potential for Brazilian exporters and plays a major role in the Southeast Asian region. In recent years, Brazilian exports to India have seen steady growth, reflecting the growing importance of this market for our economy.

Alexandre Duarte, executive director of Fermac, highlights the importance of Asia as a consumer market for Brazilian fruits: “In the last two weeks, we have been shipping an average of 150 tons of mangoes per week. These are countries with an absurd consumption power, and they also need new things in terms of food. We have grown and learned a lot about working with and producing quality fruits, and the Asians, who are always aware of what is happening in the world, saw Brazil’s potential and did not miss the opportunity”, he comments.

In 2023, the Indian market generated approximately US$ 4 billion in fruit imports, with Brazil accounting for only 0.3% of all Indian imports in the segment. Among the new initiatives to open up the Brazilian fruit market to India, the citrus and avocado markets stand out, offering unique opportunities for Brazilian exporting companies — with citrus imports from India generating approximately US$ 91 million, and the avocado market approximately US$ 10 million in 2023, according to data from the Indian Ministry of Foreign Trade.
