The antioxidant power of fruits and their benefits

Thursday March 13th, 2025

Have you ever heard of antioxidants? These compounds are true allies of our health, helping to combat free radicals, molecules that can cause damage to cells and accelerate aging. And do you know where we find a lot of antioxidants? In fruits!

Harvard University has conducted several studies on the benefits of antioxidants found in foods. One of them, published in The Nutrition Source, states that people with a low intake of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables had a higher risk of developing chronic conditions than people who ate a lot of these foods.

The benefits of antioxidants are enhanced when combined with other nutrients. That’s why Harvard has listed the nutrients and foods that are rich in antioxidant activity.

Vitamin C: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe, cauliflower, grapefruit, leafy greens, honeydew melon, cabbage, kiwi, lemon, orange, papaya, peas, strawberries, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and bell peppers.

Vitamina E: Almonds, avocado, Swiss chard, leafy greens, peanuts, red bell peppers, spinach (cooked) and sunflower seeds.

And what is the best way to obtain these antioxidants?

The answer lies in a varied menu, full of fruits, vegetables and natural foods. According to Harvard, there is no concrete evidence that isolated antioxidants offer the same benefits as a balanced diet rich in natural sources of these substances.
