Frutas do Brasil creates ESG seal to recognize and promote sustainability in the field
Brazilian fruit production is keeping pace with global transformation, keeping an eye on new sustainability demands, especially in European markets. With this in mind, Abrafrutas is in the final stages of launching the Frutas do Brasil Seal, a certification designed to recognize, organize, and promote the sector’s commitment to ESG principles.
The certification was developed to achieve specific goals aligned with environmental and social guidelines that are gaining traction in global markets. Once launched, the seal will be available to all producers associated with the Frutas do Brasil project.
The seal operates through a digital platform developed by Dimitra Brasil, where producers can perform self-diagnoses, fill out information about their practices, and receive a personalized goal plan based on their maturity level. The goal is to promote continuous improvement and offer members a competitive edge in the international market.
According to Priscila Nasrallah, ESG Director at Abrafrutas, the certification will map the ongoing actions of Brazilian producers and offer paths for improvement. The executive states that, based on this, targets will need to be met by 2031, with a focus on carbon mapping in at least 60% of member companies.
Evaluation Criteria
The Frutas do Brasil ESG Seal will assess topics such as water use control, with incentives for drip and micro-sprinkler irrigation, the use of bio-inputs, continuous soil improvement, gender equality, a living wage in the field, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The analysis points align with recently signed commitments. Last July, the Brazilian Association of Fruit Producers and Exporters signed the National Pact for Decent Work in Rural Areas. The agreement promotes the formalization of labor relations, expanding income opportunities.
